Freedom Academy A Maine Umbrella School for Homeschoolers — Est. 2001

A private school that exists for your family’s freedom

Freedom Academy is a private school operating under Option 2 of Maine’s homeschooling laws—what the state calls a Recognized as Equivalent Private School, or REPS. Under this structure, parents remain the teachers at home. Freedom Academy handles all administrative and reporting requirements on your family’s behalf.

In the eyes of the state and local school districts, your child is enrolled in a private school. Each family’s home is the classroom; each family’s parents are the teachers. You retain complete control over curriculum, schedule, and method.

Freedom Academy does not dictate course of study or teaching approach. We are here to carry the administrative burden and offer support on your homeschooling journey.

We handle the filings

If you enroll with Freedom Academy, do not file a Letter of Intent or a Subsequent Letter of Intent with your local district. All required paperwork is filed by us.

If you are transitioning from Option 1 (Letter of Intent) to Freedom Academy, contact us and we will walk you through the process.

When discussing your enrollment with local school officials, say your child is enrolled in a private school. Using the word “homeschooling” can create confusion, since officials will expect the Letter of Intent paperwork they are accustomed to receiving.

For the full guidelines from the Maine Department of Education on how a REPS should be operated, see the Equivalent Instruction Guidelines.

Christian worldview

Freedom Academy is a school with a Christian worldview. We profess a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We do not discriminate, however, based on anyone’s faith. Families of all backgrounds are welcome.

About the Administrator

Rebecca Richard became administrator of Freedom Academy in 2022. She has been homeschooling her eight children alongside her husband for more than twenty years and continues to homeschool their four youngest, ages 9–16.

Please keep in mind that we are also still an active homeschooling family. Response times may vary, and we appreciate your patience.
