Getting started
If you are new to homeschooling, the most important thing to know is that Maine law gives you considerable freedom in how you educate your children. There is no single right way to homeschool.
Freedom Academy can help you understand your obligations under Maine law, plan a course of study, and identify curriculum that fits your family’s approach. Contact us at any time with questions.
We recommend all families, regardless of experience, become familiar with Maine Home Education as a resource for state-specific information and community connection.
Curriculum ideas
Freedom Academy does not require or endorse any particular curriculum. The following are approaches many homeschooling families use. Explore them and find what fits your child’s learning style and your family’s priorities.
Classical
Organized around the trivium: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Emphasizes primary sources, Latin, and the Western canon.
Charlotte Mason
Living books, nature study, narration, and short lessons. Emphasizes relationships with ideas and the natural world.
Eclectic
Draws from multiple methods and resources. Most homeschooling families eventually land here, mixing what works best for each child.
Unit Studies
All subjects taught through a central theme or topic. Works well for multi-age families and hands-on learners.
HSLDA
While not required, we highly recommend that homeschooling families consider membership in the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). HSLDA provides legal support, legislative advocacy, and resources for homeschooling families nationwide.
